Cholesterol is known to be a key intermediate in the biosynthesis of bile acids present in the human GI tract, and removing these bile acids from the body has the added effect of removing cholesterol. Anionic exchange resins can bind with bile acids and effectively removed from the body. Typical dosage amounts are 8-24g per day for extended periods. A number of different formulations are commercialized although the predominant one is a powder sachet or small container.
